(smile). anyway, as I stated in my survey, I work but Iam seeking other employment I have been working in a hospital as a service assistant and Iam in dire need of a change, Iam always told by many of my friends that I'm in the wrong field, I should have been a teacher or a mentor or a counselor, an telephone operater, I've worked in many diffrent areas in the hospital, dietary, housekeeping, service assistant which is what I do now. I run blood and put away medicine, get wheel chairs, stretchers, etc. I was actually in training for a telephone operater but had a accident that kept me from returning, anyway I'm intrested in a change I would love to help someone in my job if I could, I really need a change, I had kids after high school and my whole life has changed. now I have time to work how I want, everyone is grown. I just need a chance to train on a job for even a secreterial position or work at the post office I am a great peoples person, I wear a uniform everyday 40 hrs. everyweek and I just want to wear my own clothes for a change, (lol) I just need to be in touch with the right people who could give me a chance to train and learn, I believe i would be a great canadiate for a hostess position too, well I won't continue to go on and on, (sorry). but if you can help me in some way or another I would greatly appreciate it. | Job Search | I earned 2 degrees in the 90's, an associates & a bachelor's, when my life turned into a living hell, my husband was a (functioning) but severe alcoholic. He also dabbled in cocaine or meth, who knows. When we were together I worked but never got serious about a career because he had 3 weeks vacation, "don't go get a job now," etc. I am currently working for the RailRoad, hereafter RR, (divorced twice, no pension, nothing from 2 marriages)& do like a lot of the job; there is good money here & benefits. I feel like I dropped through the cracks. I would love to be an instructor at a major university (@ least I think so!) Would any one have any advice on how to focus & be sure I make the right moves? My company does offer money to work towards a masters, but my hours are horrible, I usually start work in the evening: i.e., started @ 7p the 18th, "outlawed" @ 7a the 19th, did not get home til 10a. (RRer's drop the m from a.m. & p.m.) It wipes me out. Also, it took me 2 months to start sleeping normally. I have been laid off a lot which is normal the first 3 to 5 years. I did just crack $30,000. I tend to stay up very late & sleep most of the day away. Although there is a lot I like (being outdoors) I feel trapped & not sure if I make a move will it be right. I have almost 2 years here, & @ 45yrs & 4 months "young", yeah right! it is frightening to not have anything. Help!! How can I clear my mind & not give up a good retirement here? Do I have a chance to build real security @ this point in my life? Or am I just kidding myself? I try not to think about things, cause it's scaring me so bad. My inability to return to work immediately let to financial difficulties.I had to apply for welfare after being independent for over 20 years. No job and no finances and no child support I was forced to place all my families belongings in storage and move onto the couch of my mother's 3 room apartment. I have 25 years experience selling (not retail) and have been self-employed 7 years as an insurance agent and the rest selling cookies in my own wholesale business. I have a in BA psychology. I combined my buiness 9 of those years with my husbands buiness (butcher, catering, groceries etc.) and during this time, what I enjoyed and came easily to me was my time on Desk Top Publisher. I made window signs, menus, contracts, brochures and published a quartely newletter (all self taught). I will start next week with Careerlink to work on a certificate for Microsoft Office. I just purchased a new computer with Vista, added Word, Excel, Power Point and I cannot live without my Publisher. Things have changed since my old computer and I need to be familiar with the increased options. I think I can enter into the field through advertising sales or some entry marketing position that supports the sales staff. I can sell, but do not like it because of my creative interest, and the pressure is not far from my memory (or the boring sports pep talks during monday morning sales meetings). But what do I dneed, as far as schooling to obtain this goal? Do I simply take a marketing-advertising course at the community college or look into graduate work. I do need to work to help support our family and I will be strapped with the cost of child care, nevertheless I can "chip" away at my goal if I have a direction or goal plan to follow. I'm trying to find a way to make money now that will be a stepping stone torwards my goal, if possible. (any suggestions here?) Just to note: I have explored what to do with my degree in psychology and I will still persue those options, but the income potential is not even close and I have two children I need to care for. I'm age 51, with an 8 year old and a 5 year old, so I haven't the entire rest of my life so to speak. My husband is working, but starting all over having lost our business which we are still financially paying for. His potential is limited but his support is sincere. Now I would like to respond to what was asked of me as far as my skills/goals and my interest in career choices. First off, I am very good with people, I always have been, so I would love to have a job that I deal with the people. My job before marriage was fast food assisting manager and grocery stocker in my original country, so I am really struggling to find a job now. My children are getting closer to the age that they can legally stay home without adult supervision, but because of their disability, I will continue to need to be with them whenever they are not in school,which means afterschool, weekend, and summer break time. Having my husband stay with them does not make sense because he is the main source of income. I don not have extended family who can watch them. I thought obtaining a degree would help me get a job that allow me to work in my best convenient time with slightly better hourly pay. But meanwhile, I need to get a job, even a survival job. The problem is, no company wants to hire me so far. Then here is my question. When an applicant apply for a grocery store or retail store job through the computer, how should the work ethics questions look like? For example, when it ask you how much do I agree to the statement " It is ok to take some money from the store without telling anybody as long as I pay back later since my friend is facing real emergency and this is the only way to help him out."....or something, I thought an applicant was expected to answer "strongly disagree" to this kind of question. Am I right? And for a statement like " I feel frustrated when other co-worker is working slowly." Should I agree or disagree? I have been losing nearly all my self confidence for this level of unpopularity. I apply to a company that puts ad. for "currently hiring", and I apply, not picked, then next week I see the same company put the continued hiring advertisement. I am alredy a citizen, so that part should not be a problem. But first of all, I don't want to retire from a survival job site. I really want something I can do to be able to both take care of my disabled children and earn better wages than minimum one while I am not taking care of them. I sometimes hear that "Medical Coding" or "Medical Billing" workers can work from home and can make pretty good money. Is it true? Also, I am a person who feel comfortable working on math problems than constant communication with people. Up to 10th grade level math is not much a problem for me. | Job Search | I have a job making $20.00 an hour with little more than a high school education. Although the money is good, the demands of this job are making me question if it is really worth it. I am what they call a part-time flex, which means I can work as many as 50 hours a week but only guaranteed 2 hours a week. I have no set hours and generally work six days a week. | Job Search | I am 49, divorcing, non-citizen, 25 yr legal resident, living in a very rural PA area, 2 kids, a son who is a Sr. going to college next year and a 7th grade daughter. I had a business in NYC for 10 years as a textile design consultant, (I have a 4 year degree gained in UK - no proper transcript available) I stayed home w/ kids 15 yrs ago. I have all kinds of different experience in small business development and product design and have been an independent contractor for years doing design and small business development for international NGO's. I always saw myself as a designer but the recent New Choices New Options course I am taking has highlighted my PR/Marketing aptitudes. End goals are: I want to start my own business again probably developing products for small space living but I have no idea what kind of start-up $/settlement, if anything, I will get from the divorce. The best assumption for now is that I start over, repair credit, and assume I get nothing for myself but get a big chunk of support for the kids, including their college education. Short term goals are I want to use a p/t 2 day a week job doing PR and admin assistance at a local Arts Council (I start next week!) and take courses online and in NE PA, southern tier NY areas. By July '09 I hope to parlay that into a move to Philadelphia suburbs (= family support from friends and good school for my daughter) and get a job in PR/ Product Design/ Marketing/ International Aid work. I am familiar with Pantone Color software systems but all other design skills I have are manual, pen and paper. I need enough CAD, (Photoshop?) that I can design metal and fabric items (storage boxes, room screens, multi-use furniture etc.) in a form that they can be manufactured overseas. I need a job, a steady paycheck and to settle my daughter as the first priority, whatever I do PR/marketing-wise will inform the business I start in 5+ years. I need to identify the skills and best path to take to get to my goals, so my questions are: What does a PR professional (in Arts, International Aid/ Fair trade, home furnishings) need in terms of computer skills and resume? What is available INEXPENSIVELY, via auditing classes etc. in the NE PA, southern tier NY or Philadelphia area? Do you have any other advice for my situation? Thank you. | View Response | |
| Skills Search | Hello I finished a NCNO program in February and have relocated to Philadelphia and I see a job http://tinyurl.com/54gq6v I want to apply for but will be a real stretch to get. I figure I'll apply for it anyway and work real hard on getting my computer skills up to par from now until they interview. The question I have is under qualifications they say they need: 2. Advanced skill in use of PC applications, including exceptional database skills (Raiser's Edge desirable); PowerPoint, comfort with using emerging technologies for building and managing relationships and distributing targeted communications. Where in Philadelphia can I get a course in Raiser's Edge? I have not found any college classes only ads for organizations. Is there anyone in Philadelphia (accessible by public transportation)who needs some volunteer work done in trade for teaching me Raisers Edge in the next 2-3 weeks? | View Response | |
| Support Search | Hi. Call me "Overwhelmed" but I would dearly appreciate any support or suggestions for my life's decisions. My mother was in my home last summer on hospice at the same time I was going through divorce from my husband of 26 years. I've been a stay-at-home mom throughout the marriage. Mom passed and I (as executrix) have been trying to close her estate and sell her home. My legal fees were getting too costly on the divorce so husband and I settled terms this past January. Now he's cutting alimony and support down due to his drop in income and I have 4 college age children (two at home this summer)and one 5 year old. In the settlemlent, I received the house - he kept the business. Sounds good, but for the high cost of maintaining the home (mortgage is paid off, but taxes, maintenance, landscaping, homeowner's insurance, repairs, utilities, are consuming all the support he gives). I've been trying to sell this home (getting rooms painted, etc.)as well, but don't know exactly how to go about getting a new place to live if my monthly income is so low. I can't seem to put much time into the job search, because I don't yet know where I'll be living and I don't know how I'll finish getting houses sold if I'm in a full-time job. Also, the child-care is an issue. If after being out of the job market for 25 years, my earning capacity is low, it won't profit me anything if I have to turn around and spend it for childcare. Do I sound like I'm in a quandry? I'm asking for advice on how to put one foot in front of the other, because I don't feel like I know which step to work on first.
